Stripped

Postby Helisin » Mon Apr 23, 2007 8:50 pm

Bummer. Was out hovering today in the Intrepid EB and noticed my T/R gear box twitch (rotate) slightly in the tail boom while in hover. I shut down and went to tighten the two attach screws(3mm) on either side of the input section of gear box but both are stripped not allowing me to tighten enough. Good news is no major problems other than stripped threads...I think.

Just looking for advice? Thought maybe tap oversize existing holes with 3.5 or 4mm but the hole depth is very limited. How'd ya get the threads started? I could drill two new holes and tap for a 3mm screw. Again the depth is limited due to input to T/R drive, and the tap I have surely won't start a good thread in that depth. Open to comments.

Thanks in advance.

2 things that you can do, Helicoil for 3mm, or tap for 4mm.

Either way, you do have to disassemble the gearbox to accomplish the repair.

If you choose to helicoil, you must also trim the helicoil as it is longer than the hole is deep.

Tapping for 4 mm is probably the easiest way, making sure to cut down a pair of 4mm bolts to the proper length.

If you prefer, you can send the gearbox to us to facilitate the repair.

T/R g-box dis-assembly

Postby Helisin » Wed Apr 25, 2007 4:21 am

Doing the drill & tap wouldn't be a problem. Any big worries dis-assembling the T/R g-b assy? Being it came as assembled unit I haven't paid close attention to the unit. Shims for back-lash or anything? I recall another thread on helifreak i believe where you encouraged someone to send in the unit due to backlash issues. I'll try phoning tomorrow to see if you're available for a quick chat.

Suppose to be heading to Utah on 12th of May to get a few lessons from Gary Travis. If need be I can't see it being a problem getting the unit back in time? UPS'n all.

Thanks Chris,

Rob.

Aha! Ground down a allan key to access the set screw in the input shaft allowing the retaining pin to be pushed out of gear/input shaft. Input shaft removed. Just have to go pick up the 4 mm tap and some new set screws. Of coarse I stripped the input spacer retaining/set screw. May have to drill that out. I gotta get a better 3mm hex driver. Nice to know the loktite is working though!

Hopefully this will all be done for Utah then you can point out other needed improvements Gary. I'd be keen on that.

I'll post again if I run into more hurdles.

Thanks Chris, Gary.

Actually NOT the ideal solution... I had hoped to find and post the proper way to disassemble the tail before you got that far.....

I'm still looking for that file.....

Backlash

Postby Helisin » Sat Apr 28, 2007 11:38 pm

Ok, days off again :D . Tail gearbox is re-assembled with 4mm tapped screw holes all around. Just looking for tips before setting backlash and tightening the set screw.

Thanks,

Rob.
